Pinot noir has been cultivated in south tyrol for approximately 150 years, and it feels very comfortable in this area. South tyrol’s pinot noirs are among the best in italy. The grapes for this example come from the sloping vineyards around bolzano and the wine is matured in large wooden barrels. Isernia, where l'arco antico is located, is the most inland and untouched area of molise: the second smallest region in italy, the youngest and the least densely populated of all italy. ‘ferraro’ (or ‘blacksmith’, dedicated to the great-grand dad who was the village 'ferraro') is a natural, organic, unfiltered montepulciano aged for at least 12 months in oak barriques. Powerful, tannic and with great concentration; requires decanting to unlock its amazing flavours.

Supertuscan “camargi” 2012, Palma £41.00
Low yields of hand-picked sangiovese, merlot and syrah aged in french oak barriques for 12 months. The result is simply outstanding! Pair it with: ragout pasta, rib-eye steak.
Made from the oldest vineyards on the site where benedectine monks cultivated grapes in 1600, aged for 12 months in barrique. As the vines produce tiny bunches the wine is naturally very concentrated ('amarone-style'); only 700 btl are made each year. It might present a slight sparkle due to the unfiltered sediment. Amazing concentration of flavours with a lenghty finish. Require decanting. Pair it with: rib-eye steak, kleftiko.
Made from a 95 years old vineyard of a rare variety of merlot with red stalk and smaller bunches. The wine spent five years in two large Slavonian oak barrels located in the lowest part of the cellar. The “isus” vineyards was destroyed by a severe frost in 2010 and, as the experts were not able to establish the exact merlot clone, it was never replanted. 2007 was the last vintage, of which less than 36 bottles are available in uk pair it with: gnocchi, meat platter.
Sagrantino Di Montefalco DOCG 2012, Il Gheppio £54.00
The most tannic wine in the world, very often sagrantino can be a bit “aggressive”. Not this gem from il gheppio, crafted by the family from the fruit of their miniscule 2ha vineyard (shall we say back garden?). Powerful and smooth, it needs to be decanted.
