Leicester

Leicester is a multi-cultural city, but with strong tendencies towards the Indian community in terms of cuisine. The area is full of good quality Indian restaurants and takeaways almost on every street. A major attraction is the National Space Centre with over 150 interactive experiences, and a 42m rocket tower. To complete this visit, there are a multitude of 3D simulators. Located next to the cathedral, this area is full of restaurants, particularly Indian, but also a selection of pizzerias and pasta houses.

Also worth a visit is the Botanical Gardens and again, this area is full of restaurants and cafes. Indian food still prevails, and the top-rated Prithiraj does not disappoint, with unique food and great sharing platters.

When arriving in Leicester and hungry after your train journey, right next door is The Parcel Yard, a converted post office now serving food all day from breakfasts and brunches, delicious afternoon cakes and great tapas and pizzas – something for all the family tastes.

Shopping does not disappoint, mainly situated in the Highcross Centre with boutiques and specialist stores. Just outside is the well known 700 year old market, selling fresh food, clothes and homeware. There are a few street stalls, generally with ethnic food such as Indian and Thai served in cartons to take away. More interesting for food is The Lanes shopping area, a tucked away treasure trove emporium. Within The Lanes you are spoilt for choice with restaurants, delis and quaint tearooms and even top flight Michelin recommended restaurants, such as The Boot Room, a converted shoe factory with amazingly low prices for great food. Also worth a mention is Turtle Bay, so if you have been busy shopping at Highcross, this Caribbean food and atmosphere will transport you to a calm but exciting tropical oasis!

Leicester would not be complete without mentioning the White Peacock – the best bar/restaurant in the centre of Leicester, close to all shopping amenities. True affordable luxury is on the menu here, with tranquil and delightful surroundings.
